Systematics/Phytogeography / Taxonomie/ Section Schori, Melanie [1]. Diversity of Gomphandra (Stemonuraceae, Icacinaceae s.l.) in the Philippines. Gomphandra (Stemonuraceae, Icacinaceae s.l.), a widespread genus in Southeast Asia, has a center of diversity in the Philippines. Previously, eight species, all but one endemic, were recorded from the country. Herbarium specimens collected since 1970 and recent field work indicate that the number of species is approximately twice as great, with all but two species endemic to the Philippines. Half of the species are only known from one or two locales and may already be extinct, though a few other species are more widely distributed than was known. Taken together, the species display a wide range of floral and fruiting morphology; only a few appear similar to extra-Philippine Gomphandra. Preliminary molecular data have revealed practically no variation in the trnL-F spacer sequences among some morphologically distinct Philippine species. A plausible explanation for this finding, which has been suggested for similar evolutionary patterns in other taxa on archipelagos, is rapid morphological diversification combined with geographic isolation.
