Relationships among North and South American species within two genera of Vernonieae (Compositae).

The Vernonieae is a large and diverse tribe in the sunflower family, Compositae, and is well represented in the Americas (> 500 species). Understanding relationships among members of the New World Vernonieae is complicated by the geographical range of some genera, from Texas to Argentina, for example, as well as by highly variable and overlapping morphological characters. A recent molecular phylogeny of the tribe suggested that two genera, Critoniopsis and Vernonanthura, found in both North and South America were likely not monophyletic. Initial results using data from ITS, trnLc-f and ndhF sequences provide support for this hypothesis. The complex biogeographical patterns indicated by relationships within each of these genera contradict the idea of unidirectional movement from South to North America even though the most derived members of the tribe are found in North America.
