A Legume flora for Arizona.

A project is underway to complete an Illustrated Flora and Reference of all species of Fabaceae that grow wild or are cultivated in the State of Arizona. An Illustrated Flora and Reference will serve the needs of many groups including, but not limited to, farmers, horticulturists, landscapers, homeowners, botanists, herbalists, pharmacognosists, as well as professional plant researchers. As we search for new food crops, native plants for the horticulture industry, medicinal plants, plant oils and fibers, and improve technologies for fixing atmospheric nitrogen, this legume flora and reference will serve as an invaluable resource. It can become a guide for informed selection of legume plants with the greatest potential for success in the desired endeavor, from agriculture to the search for new drugs. We have considered about 380 species of native or naturalized taxa and an additional 94 cultivated species of Fabaceae. The project will follow the format of Flora of North America, with selected synonymy and references. Illustrations and range maps of all native and naturalized species would be included. Most of the state is affected by a biseasonal rainfall pattern and phenology will be an important factor to be addressed for all species. The projected time for completion of the project is three to four years. At least one new species will be described elsewhere prior to publication as the effort will not be a venue for taxonomic revisions or naming new taxa. The effort will be a contribution to the Vascular Plants of Arizona and the Flora of North America. Funding is supplied by the Wallace Research Foundation to whom we express our gratitude for supporting this work.
