Molecular Ecology and Evolution Barrett, Craig F. [1], Freudenstein, John [2]. Patterns of morphological and molecular variation in the Corallorhiza striata species complex (Orchidaceae, Epidendroideae). Corallorhiza striata Lindley is a wide-ranging, morphologically variable, mycoheterotrophic orchid complex distributed across North America. Relationships among previously delimited varieties of C. striata and recently described C. bentleyi Freudenstein are poorly understood. DNA sequencing of two plastid regions identified four major clades. Clade A consisted of C. bentleyi + C. striata var. involuta, sister to a clade of the remaining members of C. striata. Within the latter, California accessions (Clade B) were sister to accessions of C. striata vars. striata (clade D) and vreelandii (clade C); the latter were sister to each other. Principal Components Analysis and Nonparametric MANOVA based on quantitative morphological characters (using clades as independent variables) identified distinct groupings. Morphological analyses supported differentiation of both C. striata var. involuta, and C. bentleyi relative to all other accessions of C. striata, suggesting their recognition as separate species of the C. striata complex. The biogeographic scenario was more complex than previously thought, with members of both clades A and (B(C(D)) present in both southern Mexico and northern North America. Molecular and morphological patterns within the C. striata complex will be useful for future comparisons of other poorly studied plant groups sharing Mexican-northern North American geographic distributions.
