Genetic diversity in two diploid and congeneric common and rare Asplenium taxa in the western Mediterranean basin. Genetic diversity in two diploid and congeneric common and rare Asplenium taxa in the western Mediterranean basin. Two congeneric diploid fern taxa, widespread Asplenium fontanum and rare A. petrarchae, were comprehensively sampled throughout their entire ranges in the western Mediterranean basin. Genetic diversity was assessed by a combination of phylogenetic and population genetic approaches (chloroplast genomic sequence markersand allozyme markers). Both taxa are predominantly outbreeding with small deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. We recovered three gene pools and one contact zone in the Pyrenees for A. fontanum and two gene pools for A. petrarcha. Pleistocene climate fluctuation is ideantified as one of the main drivers for this diversification. Wider implications for genetic diversity in common and rare spore bearing plants will be discussed.
