Hymenostegia sensu lato (Leguminosae: Detarieae): What lurks beneath?

During a study originally designed to clarify the generic limits between two tropical African Caesalpinioid legume genera, Talbotiella and Hymenostegia, it became apparent that Hymenostegia as currently circumscribed is a heterogeneous assemblage. An investigation using morphological, molecular and palynological characters has identified a core group of species, Hymenostegia sensu stricto and one misplaced species which is to be transferred to Talbotiella (in press). However, the correct placement of the remaining species currently included within Hymenostegia sensu lato remains uncertain. The data indicate they will not constitute a single segregate genus. Our investigation which utilises morphological, molecular and palynological characters is focussed on establishing whether any or all of these misplaced taxa can be accommodated within previously described genera or whether it will be necessary to describe new genera to accommodate them.
