Phylogenetic Relationships in Amoreuxia (Cochlospermaceae) Based on Chloroplast and Nuclear DNA Sequences. Amoreuxia Moçiño & Sessé ex DC, composed of four species, is chiefly distributed in Mexico with some species extending northward into the southwestern United States and southward into northern South America. The species of Amoreuxia are herbaceous with a subterranean caudex and are morphologically similar. There are only slight variations in the leaf, fruit, and seed characters, making it challenging to identify most of the species in the field. Amoreuxia has been placed within Cochlospermaceae with Cochlospermum Kunth (12 species), a genus of trees and shrubs with a pantropical distribution in the New and Old Worlds. Chloroplast and nuclear DNA sequences were used to determine the monophyly of Amoreuxia and to examine its interspecific relationships and its relationship to Cochlospermum species. The results indicate that Amoreuxia is monophyletic and sister to Cochlospermum. Widespread A. palmatifida appears to be most closely related to A. malvifolia a species with a restricted distribution in north central Mexico. A. gonzalezii, which is very rare and federally listed as a species of concern, has a distribution sympatric with A. palmatifida, however it appears to be more closely related to the geographically distant A. wrightii.
