Developmental and Structural Section Zagorska-Marek, Beata [1], Turzanska, Magdalena [1]. Quest for center – SAM’s cellular structure and organogenic activity in Actinidia arguta (Siebold. & Zucc.) Planch. ex Miq. Developmental analysis of cell lineages visible on the surface of quite flat shoot apices of this plant, varying additionally in organographic order, has confirmed the impermanence of initial cells. Based on the observation of sectorial chimeras, it was interpreted in botanical literature as a mechanism protecting the genetic information of ever-dividing apical cells. We have compared the apices differing in phyllotaxis assuming that the most common patterns, as the main Fibonacci or bijugy, should result from geometric stability of the apex, possibly associated with permanent initials. More esoteric patterns, like Lucas, or others even less common, were expected in apices with geometry disturbed by impermanence of initials. However, regardless the type of phyllotactic pattern - constant rearrangement of cellular composition of the apex was always evident. Characteristic tetrads of more or less developmentally advanced cellular clones, drifting away from the summit were observed in all cases. The challenging problem in the face of this instability is maintenance of SAM’s generative center and its control on supracellular level. Log in to add this item to your schedule
