Floristic Diversity and Vegetation Analysis Studies in Nallamalais of Estern Ghats (Prakasam Dt), Andhra Pradesh, India.

The floristic composition and phytosociological attributes of the vegetation of two reference sites in dry deciduous forest, on the Eastern Ghats situated at Prakasam District of Andhra Pradesh, India were studied. Each site comprises more than 45 hectares. Twenty sample quadrates of 1mXlm size were placed randomly at each site for the ground vegetation analysis. Floristic analysis revealed the highest number of species (109) in site-II when compare to site-I (89). Total number of herb, shrub, and tree species encountered in the site-I was 48, 22, 19 and in site-II 62, 25, 22 respectively. In site-I the total density of tree species was 16.35 plant m2 , and 12.70 plant m-2 in site-II. The total basal area of tree species in site-I and site-II was 134.44cm2/m2, 265.14cm2/m2 respectively. Importance Value Index (IVI) revealed that Strychnos nux-vomica was predominant in site-I and, Ficus benghalensis and Borasus flabellifer in site-II. The species Index of Dominance and Shannon Weiver Index of tree species in site-I was 0.21 and 2.65 and in site-II these were 0.14 and 2.33 respectively. The species Index Dominance and Shannon-weiver Index of herbs and shrubs also showed that there is a increased trend of species diversity in site-II, whereas in site-I it has been decreased due to human interference. The present study emphasizes the need to conserve wild species in this part of Eastern Ghats of India.
