Plant Development / Développement des plantes (CBA/ABC) Park, Eunhee [1], Mehroke, Jarnail [2], Singh, Santokh [2]. Involvement of plant hormones in hypocotyl and cell growth in lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seedlings. The objective of this study is to investigate the role of plant growth regulators, gibberellic acid (GA3), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), abscisic acid (ABA), and ethylene on hypocotyl and cell growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seedlings in the light and the dark. Our studies also focus on the use of chemical inhibitors of microtubule assembly/disassembly to understand the role of microtubules in lettuce hypocotyl elongation. GA3-induced hypocotyl elongation was greater in the light than the dark. The application of gibberellic acid biosynthesis inhibitors, uniconazole and CCC resulted in a decrease in hypocotyl and cell elongation. However, addition of GA3 (10-4 M) cancelled the inhibitory effect of these chemicals in both dark and light conditions. The application of microtubule-disrupting chemicals, colchicine or oryzalin resulted in a decrease in hypocotyl and cell elongation and simultaneous application of GA3 counteracted the inhibitory effects of these chemicals more in the light condition than in the dark. IAA and NAA did not have any appreciable effect on hypocotyl elongation. The role of gibberellic acid alone or in combination with other hormones and chemical inhibitors in hypocotyl and cell growth will be discussed. Log in to add this item to your schedule
