Chromosomes on endemic plants to Korea.

It is known about 500 endemic plants incluiding quite a few of endemic species (~90 taxa) of Jeju island from total ~4100 plants in Korean peninsula. Because cytogenetic studies have been poorly known for endemic plants, our main objective is to determine the chromosome numbers and karyotype analysis of endemic plants in Korea. Chromosome data are fundamental characters of plant species and relevant to plant systematics and evolution. Karyological characteristics, such as chromosome number, the location of centromere, and the number and position of satellites, are used in cytotaxonomy. In our work, the somatic chromosome numbers and karyotype of 80 endemic plants (67 genera, 28 families) including 23 taxa of an endemic to the Jeju island were investigated. Chromosome numbers of 6 taxa (Aster altaicus var. uchiyamae, Aster koraiensis, Chrysanthemum zawadskii subsp. coreanum, Valeriana officinalis var. latifolia, Carex blepharicarpa var. insularis, Pimpinella hallaisanensis) were different from previous reports. Chromosome numbers of 39 endemic taxa are recorded for the first time, and karyotype analyses are newly conducted for 16 taxa.
