Public Domain ImageJ Software for Image Processing and Analysis in Botany.
Incorporation of Public Domain ImageJ Software in Botany increased student hands-on involvement and critical thinking through quantitative analysis of data in image format. ImageJ, Image Processing and Analysis in Java, is flexible, can display, edit and analyze images and is readily assimilated by students Selection of images or portions of images is accomplished via selection tools from the tool bar, and drawing tools allow for manipulation of images. Analysis involves measurement of entire images or portions of images and can be normalized against a standard for density or for a given measurement. To learn the program, students analyzed data from a prepared source comparing total leaf surface area to insect damaged areas. Students learned to select images or portions of images that could be recorded, graphed, compared and analyzed. Students then generated their own digital photographs during winter, of a species of tree; to provide a scale, a meter stick was included in each photograph. Student groups analyzed photographs of 10-20 different representatives of a given tree species and determined height, diameter breast height, canopy height and canopy width. Student groups were challenged to examine results for relationships among parameters which were specific for a given species of tree. Students then made predictions, computed parameters, and statistics, and generated results. Students rated this exercise as valuable and interesting. Project based assessment reflected a high level of student engagement. Assessment of this exercise informed teaching and reinforced the usefulness of ImageJ software analysis and informed student learning and understanding about image analysis.
