Categorization of cotton genotypes in salt tolerance categories on the basis of biomass production.
A solution culture experiment study was conducted in to categorize cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) germplasm against salinity stress. There were 20 cotton genotypes and three salinity levels (viz Control, 100 and 200 mol m–3 NaCl) with five replications. Seven day old cotton seedlings were transplanted into thermopole sheets floating on ½ strength Hoaglands nutrient solution (200 L). The experimental arrangement was completely randomized. 40 days after imposition of the NaCl salinity stress the cotton plants were harvested and data regarding shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight and root fresh weight and root dry weight were recorded. The data were analyzed statistically to interpret the results. A classification criterion was developed according to which the cotton genotypes were categorized in salt tolerance categories on the basis of biomass production. The cotton genotypes in salt tolerant group were B-842, FH-901, FH-900, FH-945, MNH-522 and FH-919 at 100 mol m–3 while NIAB-98, B-842, FH-901B-284, B-622, B-630, NIAB-111, FH-945 and MNH-642 at 200 mol m–3. The sensitive group comprised of MNH-633 and SLH-242 at 100 mol m–3 while at 200 mol m–3 MNH-633, NIAB-999, MNH-522 and FH-919 proved to be in salt sensitive group.
