A phylogeny of elms (Ulmus) based on chloroplast and nuclear ribosomal DNA sequence data.

We present a phylogenetic hypothesis for Ulmus based on analysis of two chloroplast regions (3’rps16–5’trnK and psbDtrnT ) and the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), a total of more than 3250 aligned bases. We sampled 71 accessions representing more than 30 named species, several infraspecies and putative hybrids, and prominent cultivars. Our work recovers the break between subgenera Ulmus and Oreoptelea identified by previous workers in the genus. It provides evidence on the sectional affiliations of species not studied in previous phylogenetic work, as well as on the taxonomic identity of several species that have been placed into synonymy.
