InsideWood: a web-accessible resource for dicot wood anatomy.

For the last five years, we have worked on a web-accessible wood anatomical database, InsideWood. This summer (July 2008), a database for fossil dicot woods will be added. This fossil wood database has over 1600 descriptions for woods for which there is information on their geological age. These descriptions use a subset of the IAWA Hardwood Feature List. This fossil wood database complements a comprehensive review of fossil wood names and synonyms by Mary Gregory, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, U.K. and Imogen Poole, Utrecht University, which will be printed by the IAWA (International Association of Wood Anatomists). The InsideWood site has an interface that allows searching the database using IAWA feature codes. The database can also be searched by scientific names, or keyword (e.g., common name, author of the publication the description is based on, wood collection abbreviation). A major objective of the site is to serve as a repository for photomicrographs of wood structure. As of April 2008, there are over 32,000 images of modern woods; the image collection includes contributions from the National Herbarium of The Netherlands, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (U.K.), CSIRO (Australia), Royal Museum for Central Africa (Belgium), FFPRI (Japan), USDA Forest Products Lab, Catholic University – Leuven, Belgium, University of Hamburg (Germany), North Carolina State University, and Santa Barbara Botanic Garden (Sherwin Carlquist). Some images are not attached to wood anatomical descriptions, but Luna Insight can browse the image collection separately, and images can be retrieved by family, genus, species, contributor, or any field configured as searchable from Insight. There is the capability to “zoom-in” and to manipulate images for incorporation into instructional material and presentations.
