Systematics/Phytogeography / Taxonomie/ Section Alexander, Patrick J. [1], Alexander, Gregory A. [2]. Identification of Leucaena using SAIKS (SLIKS-Alike Interactive Key Software). Leucaena is a primarily Central American genus of legumes including 24 species, several of which are cultivated extensively for food and one of which, L. leucocephala, has become invasive in many tropical areas. Here we present interactive online keys for Leucaena that have been constructed using the recently-developed program SAIKS (SLIKS-Alike Interactive Key Software). Interactive online keys are gaining ground in plant identification as they give authors the ability to present identification resources to users worldwide with minimal overhead. Online keys are easily updated as new taxa are described, errors are found, or new features useful in identification become known. Furthermore, online keys need not follow the dichotomous format of written keys, which allows much greater flexibility in the creation of keys. SAIKS is free and open source, readily implemented on any computer with web-serving capabilities. It is compatible with commonly-used web browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and Camino. It uses the same file format as and incorporates the full functionality of SLIKS (Stinger’s Lightweight Interactive Key Software) as well as allowing subset polymorphisms and allowing users to readily see the character states of any taxon in question.
