Phylogenetic Placement of Lepechinia (Lamiaceae).

Lepechinia is a genus comprising approximately 42 species, from perennial herbs to treelets, with a native range from the Sierra Nevada foothills of Northern California to central Argentina. Species of dubious origins also occur in Hawaii and Reunion Island. Within the Lamiaceae, Lepechinia belongs to the Mentheae tribe, subfamily Nepetoideae. Previous morphological work by Carl Epling (1935-1968) and Jeffrey Hart (1983) left unanswered questions regarding the monophyly of Lepechinia and the intrageneric relationships within the group. Results from cpDNA markers trnL-F and YCF1 as well as the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) strongly indicate Lepechinia is not monophyletic as currently circumscribed.
