Baker, Stokes S. [1].

Using digital photography to analyze wood porosity.

One woody plant adaptation to successional stage involves both qualitative and quantitative changes in wood porosity. Stanley Rice in 2004 presented a BSA workshop where undergraduates tested ecological hypothesis related to wood porosity.(http://www.2004.botanyconference.org/engine/search/index.php?func=detail&aid=16)
With the commercial availability of inexpensive digital cameras that attached of microscope oculars, it is now possible for undergraduates to perform highly quantitative analysis of wood anatomy. Workshop participants will analyze wood porosity using free software, NIH ImageJ.
Participants are encouraged to bring memory USB flash drives (a.k.a. memory stick).
