Colloquium: The Utility of Pollen in Systematic and Morphological Studies: A Celebration of the Life of John J. Skvarla Blackmore, Stephen [1], Wortley, Alexandra [2], Skvarla, John J. [3], Robinson, Harold [4]. Evolution of pollen in the Compositae. In this paper we discuss the evolution of Compositae pollen in the light of recent phylogenetic hypotheses. We focus on the diversity and distribution of Compositae pollen in relation to a phylogeny, the meta-supertree, based largely on molecular sequence data (Funk & al., 2005, Funk, pers. comm.). Over the past thirty years, advances in both systematics and palynology have come together such that pollen characters are now much more consistent with phylogeny than they were with the prevailing concepts of relationship in the 1970s. We discuss what can be learnt from palynology in the Compositae, by outlining conceptual progress and then discussing palynological characters, across the supertree as a whole and in detail in a number of exemplar tribes.
