The use of Momordia charomtia (bitter melon) to prolong the shelf life of tomatoes (hycopersicon esculentum).

Tomatoes fruits are used in almost all the homes in Nigeria to prepare various dishes of food. When it is in season it is very cheap and affordable but when it is not in season it is very expensive because of lack of preservation methods of the fruits. This experiment was therefore carried out as a way of solving this problem for consumers. The experiment was carried out in three different stages. The first stage involved the use of the leaf extract of Momordia charomtia (bitter melon) at various concentrations. The tomato fruits were soaked in different concentrations of the leaf extract. In the second stage of the experiment dried leaf powder of Momordia charomtia was mixed with sterile distilled water at different concentrations. The tomato fruits were resined in them. In the third stage of the experiment the tomato fruits were sprinkled with different weights of the dried leaf powder of Momordia charomtia. The third experiment gave the best result. In this experiment the tomato fruits sprinkled with 6grams of the dried leaf powder of Momordia charomtia preserved the fruits for more than 20 days as against the normal shelf life of 3 days of the variety of the tomato fruits used.
